Where is the honour in football when a striker deliberately trips over a defender? Where is the glory in winning when a goal is scored because of some dramatic acting? What has happened to this beautiful world game to turn it into a joke? How can a referee 2 metres away make such a dim-witted mistake? Either he needs a new pair of glasses or the world needs a new referee...

Evil spirits must be at play here =) If not how do we explain the Italian striker’s left foot being mysteriously held down... Dragging across the ground to purposely strike the Australian defender? Did you also notice how he managed to fall with such finesse, worthy of a place in China’s gymnastics team; as if a strange force had shoved him in the back?

A reporter for the Miami Herald says it best, “Italian left back Fabio Grosso broke past a defender and found himself with the ball in Australia's penalty area. He saw Lucas Neill lunging to get the ball away, so Grosso did what any savvy world-class player would do: he tumbled over Neill's body, crumpled into the fetal position and peeked out to see the referee's reaction.

To be fair to Italy, (I’ve got loads of Italian friends who I would still like to be invited to their house for dinner) how can the referee send off a player who did not even scratch the Australian striker during the tackle? Dangerous play maybe, but surely not worthy of a straight red card...

Australian Socceroos, you are heroes in our eyes. Lucas Neill, the world will remember you for giving away the penalty... But we’ll remember you for showing us how flawed this world game is, and how heroes lose graciously knowing that they did their best and played their fairest.

Shouldn't any savvy world class soccer player know better than to allow himself to get tripped over?

In the NBA this is called drawing a foul.

Tiger Woods did something similar in the US Open recently. Nearly out of play and no shot available, he purposely shot the ball into the Grandstand where by USGA rules he got a drop into a pre-designated area. Know thy rules.

It's pro sports. There's no room for whining. If you don't want to be tripped over, don't lie on the ground. Soccer is meant to be played on one's feet, not on one's back.
